HISTORY
Rau Garden was established in the 1930′s after that area failed to hold water as a lake. The garden was built using W.P.A. workers, they installed all of the walkways and beds. At the beginning the area was establised as a rose garden, but was later changed to a flower garden consisting of many different types of plants. All of these plants were grown in the greenhouse facility at Blanchette Park.

The Water Garden’s maintenance and care is sponsored by the Memphis Garden Club. The prime bloom time for water plants is is the hot summer months, peaking in August; the time frame of their blooming cycle is dependent on the water temperature.

The stars of MBG’s water lily collection are on loan from Dr. William Philips. His private collection of extraordinary specimens from South America, Australia and the U.S. are placed primarily in the Water Garden, but may also be viewed in the Sensory, Rose and Iris gardens. The Water Garden may be viewed from inside the Visitor’s Center.
